Reinach, Goosen steer Montpellier to near-safety

Springbok scrumhalf Cobus Reinach dotted down while Handre Pollard watched from the stands as Montpellier edged closer to Top 14 safety with a win over Toulon.

Reinach scored a second-half try as Montpellier claimed a 29-10 victory on Tuesday evening to move them 10 points away from the Top 14 relegation zone.

The fixture had been rescheduled from last month due to Covid-19 cases.

Springbok flyhalf Pollard was not named in the match-day 23 after making his comeback from a long-term knee injury during Montpellier’s European Challenge Cup semi-final win over Bath on 1 May.

However, there will be plenty of opportunities going forward for the World Cup winner as Montpellier now face a run of three games in 10 days, which includes their Challenge Cup final against the Leicester Tigers on 21 May.

Pollard could make his first start since September 2020 when Montpellier travel to the French capital to face Stade Francais on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth made his return from a six-week absence due to a finger injury, coming off the bench for Toulon in the second half of the match.
