Frans Steyn has revealed his thoughts heading into the World Cup final against England centred around the family loss he has endured.

The utility back played a calming role in the young squad as he joined Os du Randt as the only Springboks to win two World Cup titles.

But off the field, he has been dealt a number blows.

‘I lost my uncle a couple of weeks ago. I lost my brother a few years ago,’ said Steyn after the final whistle.

‘So, everything has changed a lot in that time from where I was then to where I am now. So on the bus on the way here, that’s what I was thinking about.

‘They were with me in here before tonight’s game.’

The 32-year-old, who replaced Willie Le Roux late on during the 32-12 final win, believes some of his young teammates will only find out what the World Cup win really means when they return home.

‘I don’t think it has hit them what they have done yet … but it will when they get home.’

The 2019 Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok squad are due to arrive back in South Africa on a number of flights from Japan over a two-day period between 5 and 6 November.

Rassie Erasmus, the director of rugby, Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and vice-captain Handre Pollard are among the first batch of the Springbok squad members due to arrive from Japan.

The Springboks will kick off their Champions Tour in Gauteng on Thursday, 7 November with stops in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Soweto.

The RWC squad will also parade the Webb Ellis Cup in a number of other locations before concluding the tour in Cape Town on 11 November.
