SA Rugby magazine readers have made it abundantly clear that England must look elsewhere for a replacement if they decide to fire head coach Eddie Jones.
The readers responded emphatically to a poll on whether Rassie Erasmus should consider reported interest from the Rugby Football Union (RFU) in making a change at head coach in the wake of Eddie Jones leading England to a fifth-place finish in the 2021 Six Nations championship.
Of the thousands polled, 69% wanted to see Erasmus stay in his current director of rugby post and help head coach Jacques Nienaber pilot the Springboks in their quest for a fourth world championship.
Only 13% were willing to let Erasmus pack his bags and potentially rally one of South Africa’s oldest rivals for an epic showdown at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.
Interestingly, 18% would have preferred Erasmus to trade in his desk and chair for a whistle and clipboard and return to the Bok head-coaching role, with Nienaber reverting to defence coach.
It remains to be seen whether the findings of the RFU’s current Six Nations campaign review will recommend a change at head coach. A poll on Jones’ future suggests local fans would like to see the Australian head to South Africa.
Regardless of what transpires, one thing is certain – the readers have got Erasmus in a bear hug.
Fire Eddie Jones? Have you lost your mind?!
