The final round of the English Premiership could be thrown into disarray after several Sale Sharks players reportedly tested positive for Covid-19.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the Sale Sharks’ crucial final round fixture against the Worcester Warriors on Sunday could be cancelled after the Manchester-based club returned a ‘double-figure number’ of positive coronavirus tests.

The Sale Sharks are currently in fourth place on the Premiership table and are fighting to secure a place in the semi-finals, with the fifth-placed Bristol Bears breathing down their neck with just points difference separating the two sides.

Second-placed Wasps and third-placed Bath are all also in contention to fall out of the playoff spots depending on the results from this weekend’s matches.

However, Sale could now be forced to forfeit Sunday’s match at the AJ Bell stadium, which would guarantee both Wasps and Bath a place in the semi-finals. Bristol would need just one point from their final match against London Irish to qualify if this happens.

Premiership Rugby announced on Friday morning that there would be a delay in the team announcements, but according to the report are scrambling for a solution. The league has yet to comment on the situation.
