Handré Pollard is expected to miss the start of the Rugby Championship after going under the knife again last week.
The 23-year-old flyhalf missed the entire 2016 season because of knee and shoulder injuries, and then suffered ligament damage to his right ankle in April.
He was set to play a part in South Africa A's second match against the French Barbarians in June, but aggravated the injury during training.
According to Netwerk24, a procedure last week to remove 'anchors' supporting the damaged ligament, was successful.
However, Pollard is not expected to complete his rehabilitation and conditioning by the time the Springboks get together in Port Elizabeth on 8 August ahead of the Rugby Championship.
