Handre Pollard is ‘ready for the challenge’ after suffering a serious knee injury while in action for French club Montpellier.

Pollard was injured during Montpellier’s loss to Racing 92 last Friday and had to be stretchered from the field.

In a media release on Monday, Montpellier confirmed that Pollard had torn his anterior cruciate ligaments and is expected to spend at least six months on the sidelines.

It’s believed that he will return to South Africa to undergo surgery and begin his recovery.

The news does come as a massive blow to the Springboks ahead of the scheduled Rugby Championship in November. The team will already be without lock RG Snyman and Lood de Jager, who also suffered serious injuries while playing for overseas clubs.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Pollard spoke of the highs and lows that rugby brings, but reiterated his determination to come back ‘stronger’.
