Springbok flyhalf Handré Pollard was told he could lose his arm because of a serious shoulder infection.
The flyhalf tore knee ligaments at a Bulls training session in February, which ruled him out for the season. He then opted to have surgery on a shoulder that he had injured while playing club rugby in Japan.
While at the Pretoria hospital, Pollard picked up a shoulder infection that required him to spend an additional five weeks there receiving intravenous antibiotics for up to seven hours a day.
'There was a possibility [of amputation], they told me that early on, but luckily we identified it as early as possible, if we had let it go another month or so there was a big chance of that,' Pollard told EWN Sport. 'Everything was sorted quite quickly, there was a possibility of that but fortunately I’ve still got all my limbs and can play some rugby.'
