The view on the short-term solution to reducing costs in South African rugby appears to have become muddled, according to reports.

Following the suspension of rugby due to the coronavirus pandemic, the role players in the game had formed the Covid-19 Management Committee which includes SA Rugby, the South African Rugby Employers’ Organisation (SAREO), MyPlayers (representing the players) and Sports Employees’ Unite (SEU – the rugby staffs’ trade union) and the group appeared to be singing from the same hymn sheet with plans to reduce costs agreed in principle.
The landscape has changed though, according to a report by Sunday newspaper Rapport.
The newspaper stated that My Players wants South African players and coaches to be granted the option of cancelling their deals after agreeing to having their wages cut.
The clause would give those wanting to take up the clause 60 days to end their current deals if they secured offers from other clubs.

The next hurdle came in the form of a fresh report that the Bulls players were threatening a rebellion of sorts regarding the salary cuts.
Josh Strauss, who has been linked to that move, has clarified the stance on the matter, though.
The Bulls eighthman said: ‘Along with other senior players, I received calls from younger players about the proposed salary reductions being made public.
‘There was a lot of concern and confusion, which is to be expected. The reality is that none of us is fully equipped to handle the situation, so we acted proactively and sought professional advice.’
