Paul Roos beat New Zealand National Championship winners St Peter’s 52-5 in the final of the Sanix World Schools tournament in Japan on Sunday.
The Stellenbosch school went unbeaten through the week-long tournament, which involves some of the top-ranked schools from around the world.
In their pool matches, Paul Roos beat Toin Gakuen 34-13, Kyoto Kogakuin 49-7 and Enisei-STM 54-5. They progressed to the quarter-finals where they met Exeter, who were easily dispatched in a massive 75-0 victory.
Paul Roos continued their winning ways in the semi-finals as they beat Waverley College of Sydney 41-21 after leading 34-0 at the break.
The final looked set to be a much tighter affair as St Peter’s managed to restrict the South Africans to a 17-5 lead. However, Paul Roos ran away with the second half as St Peter’s were left exhausted with very little territory or possession to speak of.
It was Paul Roos’ second title at the tournament, as they were runners up to King’s College of Sydney in the inaugural year in 2000, winning it for the first time in 2015.
