Paul Roos claimed their first win over Paarl Boys’ High in three years with a record 44-8 victory in Stellenbosch on Saturday. DYLAN JACK reports.
Led by the deadeye kicking of fullback Kade Wolhuter, who slotted three penalties and five conversions to go along with a try for a 24-point haul, the home side scored 28 unanswered second-half points in their biggest ever win against their Cape rivals.
A try from wing Tiaan Pretorius, to go with Wolhuter’s first penalty and conversion, gave the hosts a 10-point lead, but that was quickly cut down by Boishaai, who got a try of their own when wing Carlo Uys did brilliantly to release No 8 Gideon van Wyk to score, with flyhalf Kian Meadon adding a penalty.
Wolhuter then added two penalties on the stroke of half-time, one of them from the halfway line, to give his side a 16-8 lead at the break.
REPORT: Grey secure dramatic victory
The hosts made an excellent start to the second half when, after an initial break from hooker JJ Kotze, the ball was spread wide with Wolhuter on hand to provide the finish in the corner.
Big lock Mink Scharink exploited a gap near the ruck to go over from close range to give the hosts some breathing room, before tries from No 8 Matthew Cordy – who showed good strength to shrug off three tacklers and roll over the line – and Kotze completed an emphatic win.
