Paris rugby merger cancelled

The planned merger between Racing 92 and Stade Français has been called off amid strong opposition.

The owners of the two Parisian clubs announced their intention to form one super club in the French capital last Monday, but the decision didn’t sit well with both sets of players and supporters.

On Sunday Racing 92 president Jacky Lorenzetti confirmed that the proposed merger will not go ahead.

‘I have decided to give this beautiful project up,’ Lorenzetti said in a statement.

‘I did not expect such resistance, especially internally,’ he added.

The cancellation of the merger comes after Stade Français players began an open-ended strike last week, denouncing what they deemed a takeover in disguise.
