Paper Talk: Zondagh to resign?

Bulls director of rugby Alan Zondagh Alan Zondagh
Published on February 2, 2020

A round up of what some of South Africa’s leading Sunday papers are saying, including an update on changes going on at the Vodacom Bulls.

The major sports news in Rapport focuses on the Bulls, as it appears that Alan Zondagh has resigned as director of rugby at the union. According to the report, written by Brenden Nel, Zondagh has asked for his contract to be terminated despite only being appointed in his role in 2018. Zondagh is reportedly set to resign for personal reasons, as he did not want to travel between the Western Cape and Pretoria, where he is away from his family.

Staying with Rapport, the newspaper reports that Stormers and Springbok prop Wilco Louw could soon be on his way to England, joining centre Andre Esterhuizen at Harlequins. Louw and his agent reportedly had a meeting with Harlequins coach Paul Gustard in Cape Town. The 25-year-old is contracted to Western Province Rugby until the end of this year, but would like to get more game-time after competing with fellow Springbok Frans Malherbe for the starting tighthead prop spot at the Stormers.

Meanwhile, the Lions have offered an explanation as to why former head coach Swys de Bruin was not allowed to conduct interviews with their players for a SuperSport programme. Lions chairperson Altmann Allers told Rapport that De Bruin is simply too close to the players and coaching staff, following his recent resignation as head coach last year.
