Paper Talk: Boks target Human

Bulls scrum coach Daan Human Daan Human
Published on January 19, 2020

A round up of what some of South Africa’s leading Sunday papers are saying, including an update on the new Springbok coaching staff.

The major story in Rapport includes an update on the Springbok coaches for the new cycle. According to the report, written by Hendrik Cronje, the Springboks are in preliminary talks to secure Daan Human as their new scrum coach. Human has impressed in the same role with both the Cheetahs and Vodacom Bulls and could now be set to step up as part of Jacques Nienaber’s staff, with Deon Davids appointed as an assistant coach. Human would act as a consultant and would still be available to the Bulls.

Staying in the same report, the Springboks’ Rugby Championship Test could take place at the Mbombela stadium this year, rather than at Ellis Park. The report states that SA Rugby director of rugby Rassie Erasmus has made his recommendations over where the Boks’ Rugby Championship home matches should take place. It would be the first time that the Springboks would play at Nelspruit since their 2016 win against Argentina. The Boks would reportedly bid farewell to Newlands with the incoming Test against Scotland in July.

Finally, it appears as if referee Egon Seconds has been left off the Vodacom Super Rugby referees panel. According to the story, written by Brenden Nel, former player Seconds, who angered supporters with a few of his decisions, is not part of this year’s panel for Super Rugby.  The reports goes on to state that South Africa now only have one Test-level referee in Jaco Peyper, while the country is not represented at all in on the Sevens referees panel.
