Paarl Gym power past SACS

Paarl Gym scored five tries to beat SACS 39-15 in their Cape clash on Saturday.

Both teams came into this match with eight wins and a single defeat. Gimmies, though, had history on their side, having won the last 15 encounters between the sides. And it would become 16.

SACS flyhalf Jordan Chait opened the scoring with a 10th-minute penalty, but Paarl Gym dominated the rest of the first half, scoring 22 unanswered points.

Tries from scrumhalf Zak Burger and hooker Johan Grobbelaar, either side of a penalty try, gave the visitors a commanding lead going into the break.

While SACS started the second half well, Paarl Gym winger Keenan Abrahams scored an intercept try.

SACS finally crossed the tryline through Chait, and again through winger Tumi Mogoje, before Gimmies centre George Lourens scored an intercepted try to round off a comprehensive win.

'We were clinical,' Paarl Gym 1st XV coach Christoff Lotter told SARugbymag.co.za. 'Whenever they made a mistake we capitalised on it.'

'We gave them too many points,' said SACS 1st XV coach Graeme Wepener. 'They’ve got a great lineout, and thrive off mauls. We allowed them to play to their strengths. We were chasing the game, and we lost a bit of structure trying to throw the ball around too much.'

SACS – Tries: Jordan Chait, Tumi Mogoje. Conversion: Chait. Penalty: Chait.
Paarl Gym – Tries: Zak Burger, penalty try, Johan Grobbelaar, Keenan Abrahams, George Lourens. Conversions: Naudé Wessels (4). Penalties: Wessels (2).
