Paarl Boys’ High and Bishops will meet in Cape Town in one of a number of entertaining schoolboy rugby matches this weekend, writes DYLAN JACK.
While much of the attention over the past week or so has been on the Youth Week trials and Craven Week selections, there are still a few crackerjack games to look forward to this weekend.
There are a number of entertaining fixtures going on in the Cape, with Boland Landbou at home to Paarl Gym, Paul Roos hosting Oakdale, SACS taking on Wynberg and Stellenberg pitting their skills against in-form Rondebosch.
However, it would seem that Bishops is the place to be as they host a Paarl Boys High 1st XV that will have been boosted by their 29-16 victory over Paul Roos last weekend.
The hosts are currently on a five-match winning streak, claiming big wins over Boland Landbou (53-19) and Wynberg (60-40) along the way. Bishops’ only loss in the country came in an early season match against Paarl Gim, which the 1st XV seem to have put behind them.
Boys’ High, meanwhile, will want to build on that win over Paul Roos, where their forwards laid the platform for Peter Engledow’s side to pick up a well-deserved victory. The visitors do have an equally deadly backline, with wings Javier Farmer and Angelo Osch in good form, as is flyhalf Kian Meadon, who showed excellent game management against Paul Roos.
Bishops have largely stuck to their traditional game-plan, looking to play expansively whenever possible. They too possess excellent players in their backline in centre Luca Liebenberg and fullback Joe Kirsten, in particular.
Eyes should also be kept on the traditional derby between SACS and Wynberg. While both 1st XVs are not as strong as in previous years, they will probably be evenly matched, definitely more so than last year, when Wynberg did the double over one of their main rivals.

Meanwhile, up north there are a few Virseker Cup matches worth watching, with a Krugersdorp derby taking place between Monument and Noordheuwel, while Helpmekaar face Menlopark in what should be the toughest match of the weekend.
There are also a couple of eye-catching games in KZN as Hilton welcome Maritzburg College and DHS play in a Durban derby against a young Glenwood side.
