Wales rugby bosses are to hold talks on Tuesday about the possibility of a merger between the Scarlets and Ospreys.
According to the Telegraph, the newly formed Professional Rugby Board (PRB), a gathering of representatives from the five professional entities in Welsh rugby will discuss the proposal.
The talks will form part of ‘Project Reset’ which plans to make the most radical change to Welsh rugby since the inception of regional rugby in the country in 2003.
The motivation behind the move is believed to be that the Welsh Rugby Union would like to introduce a side in north Wales.
The Ospreys and Scarlets are Wales’ two most successful franchises and traditional rivals, with the Ospreys winning four league titles while the Scarlets won the Pro12 in 2017.
It is hoped the combined franchise would stand a better chance of competing in Europe. Players’ contracts with both franchises would be honoured and both head coaches will form part of the coaching staff, should the move go through.
