Springbok lock Marvin Orie’s departure from the Lions has been confirmed after he opted against signing a contract extension with the union.
Orie joined the Lions from the Vodacom Bulls in 2017 and his contract with the union ended this month. It is believed the Lions had been keen to keep the 27-year-old at Ellis Park, but the union and Orie’s representatives could not reach an agreement.
The Lions initially posted a message on their social-media platforms, which read: ‘Join us in wishing Marvin Orie all the best for the future. Thanks for the memories.’

A Lions spokesperson then confirmed the posts relate to Orie’s departure.
‘He opted not to re-sign with us. We have no information as to his plans going forward.’
According to Rugby365.com, the player had also wanted to stay at the Lions, but the negotiations between the parties failed.
‘Marvin wanted to re-sign, but we just could not reach an agreement. The Lions could not meet our demands, so we decided to move on and look at other options.’
