Orie joins Ospreys on short-term deal

Former Lions lock Marvin Orie Marvin Orie
Published on October 23, 2019

The Ospreys have announced the loan signing of Springbok and Lions lock Marvin Orie on a short-term deal until December.

Orie was left out of the Springboks’ 31-man squad for the World Cup, with Lood de Jager, Eben Etzebeth, Franco Mostert and RG Snyman all having travelled to Japan.

The 26-year-old will make a temporary move to Swansea to join the Ospreys, who lost three first-choice locks to Wales’ World Cup squad.

Orie will play for the Ospreys until 26 December, when he will rejoin the Lions for their preparations for the 2020 Vodacom Super Rugby season.

‘Its a challenging time for the squad with Alun Wyn Jones, Adam Beard and Bradley Davies at the World Cup and injuries to James King and now Ben Glynn, who was added to give us experience and much-needed resource at second row,’ Ospreys manager Dan Griffiths said.

‘The addition of Marvin, however, will bring a huge boost in a time of critical need.

‘His experience at both international level with the Springboks and through playing in a successful Lions team in Super Rugby will add real quality to the squad. We are delighted to have him on board until the end of the year in what is going to be a challenging and demanding few months for the club.’

Orie will complete his visa application before the end of the week and will likely join the squad in time for their next home game against Connacht on 2 November.

‘I’m looking forward to flying out to Wales to join the Ospreys as soon as possible,’ Orie said. ‘With big European and PRO14 games coming up between now and Christmas, it’s going to be great to join them as they build their season over the coming months.’
