SA Rugby is expected to scrap the traditional Springbok selection panel when the new coach is announced.
According to Rapport, the decision was taken at SA Rugby’s executive meeting on Friday. South African Super Rugby coaches will serve as Bok selectors under the new coach.
Former Stormers coach Allister Coetzee is the preferred candidate for the position, with his appointment set to be made official on 12 April.
The expectation is that Nollis Marais, Franco Smith, Johan Ackermann, Gary Gold, Deon Davids and Robbie Fleck will meet with Coetzee and Peter Jooste weekly to discuss their players’ form. SA Rugby's high performance manager Rassie Erasmus will also assist in an advisory role.
Coetzee’s management team is also likely to be smaller than his predecessor’s – around 12, which is eight less than former Bok coach Heyneke Meyer had during the 2015 World Cup.
SA Rugby is also expected to announce two new sponsors within the next two weeks, with one of those likely to be a sponsor for the 15-team qualifying stage of the Currie Cup.
