Munster and Gloucester have rejected approaches from the Blue Bulls for head coaches Johann van Graan and Johan Ackermann respectively.
The Bulls are finalising a shortlist to replace former coach and director of rugby John Mitchell, who left to take up a role as England defence coach.
Reports in Ireland suggested Munster turned down an approach for Van Graan, who was appointed after Rassie Erasmus returned to South Africa.
The committee appointed to find a new coach were also rejected by Gloucester after they approached Ackermann.
Victor Matfield remains a likely candidate given his immediate availability as well as his eagerness to work with Erasmus, who has shown a willingness to help the side during Super Rugby.
