Lions defence coach Joey Mongalo is set to resume his duties on 6 May, but will undergo corrective disciplinary action after being found guilty of indecent assault by an Australian court.
In April last year, Mongalo was accused and subsequently charged with allegedly indecently assaulting a female hotel staff member in a stairwell three days after the Lions’ match against the Waratahs. Two weeks ago, he was convicted and sentenced by an Australian magistrate court.
The Lions conducted their own internal disciplinary procedure, chaired by an independent labour consultant, and confirmed on Thursday that Mongalo is scheduled to be back in his post next Monday.
‘Mr Mongalo was found to have breached company policy by bringing the company’s name into disrepute. The company has decided to proceed with the recommended sanction handed down by the independent labour consultant, which includes corrective disciplinary action and compulsory ethical and professional management training,’ read the Lions’ statement.
‘Legally Mr Mongalo maintains his innocence and therefore continues to appeal the Australian Magistrate court ruling, and he proceeds to do so in his private capacity. Mr Mongalo is scheduled to resume his duties on Monday 6 May 2019, and the company considers the matter as finalised.’
