Monday Motivation: Know your identity

If you’re looking for some Monday Motivation, Springbok and Lions wing COURTNALL SKOSAN has you covered.

When I moved to the Vodacom Bulls as a junior, I saw young kids with big cars and wearing designer clothes, and it was a very overwhelming experience. Wherever we went people knew the guys I was with, and this was all new too.

It was so overwhelming that I had begun to compare myself to those around me, and wanted the same lifestyle and things that they had.

Within a year or so, I soon came to the realisation that we all have our own journey and comparing yourself to someone else’s life or journey could be detrimental to your growth and self-discovery. What we see is not always as grand as it looks and what we think we want, might not always be what we need.

I am a big supporter and prescriber of self-awareness and knowing your identity. I struggled with this for a very long time, but know that it’s one of my biggest strengths now. Knowing who you are and owning it is a special ability that not many have.

The only person you should compare yourself to should be the person you were yesterday. Every day is a new opportunity to be better. Use today to become a better version of yourself.

Celebrate other people’s victories and celebrate your own, too. No matter how big or small they are. Life is a constant journey of growth. Some days more than others. Enjoy it and embrace it!

*Skosan and his wife, Semone, recently started an apparel brand called ‘Always Look Up’.  This particular phrase has been a part of Courtnall’s daily life for many years. He believes that no matter what happens in your life, you should acknowledge the fact that there is a higher power than yourself that you can turn to. Sometimes to say thank you, and other times to ask for guidance.

This is a daily reminder for any person, like you reading this right now, that we can look up even when it is difficult, and remember where our strength and blessings come from.
