Michael Cheika will coach the Wallabies through to the 2019 World Cup despite the side’s poor start to the 2018 season.
The Wallabies are coming off a series loss to Ireland and, more recently, two heavy defeats to the All Blacks. According to Rugby Australia CEO Ralene Castle, however, there is little chance the coach will be replaced before his contract expires.
‘He’s contracted through to [the] World Cup,’ Castle said. ‘He’s got a plan, we’re across that plan, we’re comfortable with it.
‘But clearly, you can’t just ignore the performances, they’re not acceptable. So it’s about what can we do to support him as an organisation to make sure he’s got what he needs to make sure the Wallabies are successful as we lead into that World Cup.
‘Certainly from our perspective, the board and myself, our support’s behind Michael Cheika.’
The Wallabies will host the Springboks at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday next week.
