England wing Jonny May says his team will look to improve their discipline ahead of the second Test against the Springboks in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
The tourists conceded 12 penalties to South Africa’s four in last Saturday’s Test at Ellis Park. Faf de Klerk was also the recipient of a few off-the-ball tackles, which eventually saw Mako Vunipola sent to the sin bin for a shoulder charge on the scrumhalf.
May told The Guardian that they are fully aware of the game-changing implications a high penalty count has.
‘We should have realised by now the impact one penalty has on the momentum of a game, let alone back‑to‑back penalties.
‘We have spoken as a group because we’re desperate to be the best,’ May added. ‘One penalty can really get a team going. It’s such a frustrating one because we don’t want to be giving away penalties. We know better than that.’
May added that England’s five-match losing streak is not on their minds as they enter into the decisive Test in the three-match series.
‘I don’t really think about losing five in a row. I’m sure the other boys are like that as well. But we know what is at stake.’
