World Cup-winning flank Kwagga Smith will rejoin the Springbok Sevens team in a bid to be in contention for selection for the 2020 Olympic Games.
The 26-year-old joined Japanese club side Yamaha Jubilo on a permanent basis after a successful World Cup campaign with the Springboks in 2019.
He played Vodacom Super Rugby for the Lions last year, but will not return to the union when the Top League campaign ends around mid-year.
According to Rapport, Smith will return to South Africa to link up with the Blitzboks for the latter stages of the World Sevens Series in a bid to boost his chances of making coach Neil Powell’s 12-man squad for the Olympics.
The Afrikaans newspaper also reports that Smith could sign for the Sharks post the Olympics, with the Durban union believed to be chasing his services. Should Smith go to the Sharks, he will join fellow Blitzbok and close friend Werner Kok in Durban.
