Western Province centre Dan Kriel says Ruhan Nel’s call-up to the Springboks has inspired the rest of the squad. DYLAN JACK reports.
Nel, who had signed permanently with WP in a quest for higher honours, was included in the Bok squad for the Rugby Championship games against the Wallabies and All Blacks.
The former sevens player has impressed in his second stint in the Currie Cup and Kriel said his centre partner has left an impact on the squad.
‘I am extremely happy for Ruhan,’ Kriel said. ‘He is a really hard worker, very committed and dedicated to the team.
‘He has only played four games this year and he has already got a Springbok call-up. So it sends a message to everyone that the opportunities are there.
‘To see how hard he works, day in and day out, shows you as a player that [hard] work can go a long way.’
Kriel, who joined WP from the Bulls last year, is enjoying the chance to show what he can do with a bit of game-time.
‘It was about opportunities,’ Kriel said on the move to the Cape. ‘But it was also a chance to get a change of scenery.
‘I was struggling to get game-time with the Bulls at Currie Cup and Super Rugby levels, so I saw a window of opportunity at Province.
‘I am really enjoying this campaign and being given a nice opportunity to start in the No 12 jersey. It is a great union, we have great coaches so it has really been a good move for me.’
