The Southern Kings have reportedly made a massive R2-million offer for former Cheetahs coach Rory Duncan despite their financial troubles.
According to a report on Sport24, Kings chairman Loyiso Dotwana wants to make Duncan the franchise’s new head coach to finally fill the gap left by Deon Davids’ departure in 2019.
The Kings botched their search for a new head coach last year as they appointed a seven-man panel to sift through the applications and hold interviews but, according to the report, always had Duncan in mind for the role.
An official from the franchise told Sport24 that Dotwana made the offer for Duncan without the knowledge of minority shareholders the Eastern Province Rugby Union.
The news comes shortly after Kings players and staff were reportedly paid their salaries 10 days late and needed a bailout from the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality in order to pay the salaries.
The Kings could now lose top players such as lock Bobby de Wee and wing Yaw Penxe as the franchise struggles with financial uncertainty during the Covid-19 crisis.
