Robbie Kempson has revealed that the Kings are on the hunt for a new head coach in the lead-up to the 2020-21 season.
Kempson, who was initially appointed as the Kings’ director of high performance, took on the added responsibility of interim head coach at the beginning of the 2019-20 season following the departure of his predecessor, Deon Davids.
At a media briefing this week, Kempson confirmed that the Kings and SA Rugby are looking at bringing in a new coach and that he himself is ready to relinquish the coaching reins to focus exclusively on his high-performance role.
‘I still enjoy the coaching, but I would prefer to bring in a head coach,’ he said as reported by Rugby365.com. ‘I prefer to have someone else in that role [head coach].’
‘Yes, we have been chatting with SA Rugby. I will remain involved in mentoring the forwards, especially the scrums. If we are fortunate enough to bring someone else in, then they can take that head role and I can move aside.
‘I think it’ll create an opportunity for a lot of young coaches that are out there.’
