Eddie Jones says a lack of ambition in Japanese rugby influenced his decision take up the role as Stormers coach.
Jones will assume his new position at the start of the 2016 Super Rugby season, but is expected to arrive in Cape Town at the conclusion of his World Cup commitments with Japan.
Although Jones guided Japan to a historic win over the Boks on Saturday, he said he wasn’t confident that the national team was in a position to ‘move to the next stage and keep getting getting better’.
‘I’ve found myself questioning the ambition of the people running the sport there,’ he told The Independent. ‘It’s very disappointing.
‘I worked pretty hard to make the Super Rugby thing happen, but it doesn’t look like working out,' he said, referring to the planned introduction of a Japanese team to Vodacom Super Rugby next year. ‘There are a lot of issues in Japanese rugby at the moment and I don’t feel things are moving forward in the right way.’
