What NICK MALLETT had to say on SuperSport about the Sharks’ 24-14 win over the Stormers at Kings Park in Durban on Saturday.
‘In the Louis Schreuder incident, he lands on the flat of his back and then his head gets whiplashed backwards but he had his arm to protect himself. It was unbelievably poor play by Johan du Toit, who is looking at the ball, then has a look at Schreuder, doesn’t stop and then takes a knee in the head for his troubles.
‘It’s back first in my opinion. And that is exactly what the referees have to consider. The one thing about this that is important, is that the referee had to identify if it was foul play. And, yes it was. Then he has to ask were there mitigating circumstances, and the ref found mitigating circumstances. I agree with AJ Jacobs and that fact he took another look at it and decided it was just a yellow card.
Talking point: Du Toit’s yellow card
‘It looked like the Stormers were always pushing up the hill in order to try and get back. There was a real difference when Steven Kitshoff went off. Because of that injury to Kitshoff, they brought a young loosehead on. But it wasn’t so much his fault, it was the whole front row whose fragility came through.
‘Wilco Louw had a hard time against Ox Nche and Craig Burden put a lot of pressure on a tiring Scarra Ntubeni at the end. So, those scrums at the end took the game away from the Stormers. It was 16-14 and there was a possibility that they could come back perhaps if they played in the Sharks’ territory, but given the dominance that the Sharks had at the set piece and also the aggression at the breakdown where they counter-rucked well and managed to get a number of turnovers, the Sharks deserved to win.’
