The Hurricanes have promoted Jason Holland to head coach after John Plumtree was included in Ian Foster’s coaching team at the All Blacks.
Holland, who’s been an assistant coach at the Hurricanes for the last few seasons, will start his new role with immediate effect as the Wellington team prepare for the upcoming Super Rugby competition.
Plumtree was unveiled on Wednesday as one of the assistant coaches in the new-look All Blacks coaching staff under the guidance of Foster, who replaced Steve Hansen after the World Cup.
Holland was an assistant coach at Munster and Canterbury before joining the Hurricanes permanently in 2015.
Holland says it is a dream come true to be in charge of a team like the Hurricanes.
‘I’m delighted to be offered the opportunity with a team I am really passionate about,’ said Holland after the announcement.
The 47-year-old, together with Plumtree, was instrumental in helping the Hurricanes win the 2016 Super Rugby title and is excited about the former Sharks coach’s new role at the All Blacks.
‘We are obviously thrilled for Plum, who has deservedly been afforded an opportunity with the All Blacks, and we have been working hard over the last few weeks to make transition seamless for the squad, who are also thrilled for him.’
Holland, who represented Manawatu and Taranaki in his playing days, also confirmed that former Hurricanes and All Blacks wing Cory Jane will join his coaching team as the defence coach.
‘CJ had a superb career as a player and we have seen him develop over the last few years as a coach. He did a great job as assistant coach with Wellington and we are excited about he will bring to the group,’ said Holland.
