Bulls coach explains Hendricks, Steyn selections

Morne Steyn Bulls flyhalf Morne Steyn in action against Tuks
Published on January 17, 2020

Vodacom Bulls coach Pote Human has elaborated on his team selections ahead of this weekend’s Super Hero Sunday clash with the Lions.

Human has opted to start veteran Morne Steyn over Manie Libbok while former Springbok wing Cornal Hendricks will start at outside centre for the match at the FNB Stadium.

Speaking to Netwerk24, Human revealed that selecting the team was not an easy decision.

‘Yes, a guy like [captain] Burger [Odendaal] will be there and perhaps Speckies [Rosko Specman] is safe at wing,’ said Human.

‘But at flyhalf and scrumhalf, we will struggle to choose. The same is true at hooker where we have four strong candidates.’

The 35-year-old Steyn has returned to the Vodacom Bulls after a seven-year spell at Top 14 side Stade Francais with much speculation over whether the experienced Springbok would be the first-choice flyhalf ahead of Libbok this season.

‘Everyone knows what Manie can do, but I’d like to see more of Morne. He looks very fit and sharp and had a good 30 minutes against Tuks,’ said Human.

‘I would also like to give Manie a chance at fullback, because he is very dangerous when he is given space.’

Human added that Hendricks could prove a threat in midfield and perhaps fill the void at outside centre following Jesse Kriel’s departure to Japan.

‘I’d like to give him a chance there to see if it works out,’ added Human. ‘Cornal is big, fast and physical and also someone that wants to be involved and run with the ball.’

The Super Hero Sunday clash will kick off at 3:15pm.
