Griquas thump Lions

Published on May 16, 2014 | Leave a response

Griquas scored three unanswered tries to beat the Golden Lions 30-6 in the Vodacom Cup final in Kimberley on Friday night.

This was the third final involving the teams, with Griquas having smashed the Lions 57-0 in 1998 and the Lions returning the favour with a 73-7 win in 1999.

The defending champion Lions started the game well and took an early lead when flyhalf Willie du Plessis punished Griquas for an indiscretion at the breakdown. Moments later, Griquas flyhalf Francois Brummer slotted a long-range drop goal to level matters. Du Plessis replied with a drop of his own before Prinsloo kicked a penalty.

Another Prinsloo penalty in the 33rd minute gave the hosts the lead, which they stretched to 10 points after some good pressure and a try by Brummer. Prinsloo converted to make it 16-6.

Griquas totally dominated the second half, as two more converted tries, by replacement wing Danie Dames and flank Marnus Schoeman, gave them a convincing win.

Griquas – Tries: Francois Brummer, Danie Dames, Marnus Schoeman. Conversions: Gouws Prinsloo (3). Penalties: Prinsloo (2). Drop goal: Brummer.
