Grey High overcame Boland Landbou 16-10, while there were also wins for Selborne, SACS, Paarl Gym and Muir on day two of the Cape Schools Week.
Landbou scored an early try through winger Sergull van Niekerk, before the festival hosts responded with a try from scrumhalf David Masterson. Flyhalf Curwin Bosch kicked the conversion and added a penalty to see Grey lead 10-5 at the break.
Bosch added another penalty early in the second half. Landbou then scored through scrumhalf Deon Carstens to reduce the deficit to three, but a 50m drop goal by Bosch sealed the win for Grey.
Grey coach Tim Fraser praised his side's defence.
'Defensively we made a fantastic effort today,' he told SARugbymag.co.za. 'They played a lot of the game in our half, and attacked our line for sustained periods. It was an arm-wrestle a lot of the time, they're a hard bunch, and we weren't as accurate as we would have liked to have been.
'On a positive note, we've picked up two victories without being at our attacking best, so if we can click, I think we can pass the test SACS will pose on Wednesday.'
Landbou coach Oloff Bergh was proud of his team despite the loss.
'We're happy with how we played, we showed good character throughout the match. We have four players at Craven Week, but that's not an excuse. Grey defended extremely well, and Curwin Bosch was exceptional. Anyone could have won that game, though. We scored more tries but missed all our kicks, and that's what cost us.'
