Grey, Monument draw titanic battle

Grey College and Monument played to an exciting 10-10 draw in the headline game of the Kearsney Easter Festival.

The Bloemfontein side led 10-0 after just nine minutes through tries by prop Ruben Terreblanche and fullback Henry Immelman.

Monument regrouped and a tough forward battle ensued, but neither team was able to score any further points in the half.

Grey had all the momentum after the break and Monnas had to defend bravely to fight off wave after wave of attack. It was on one such occasion, as Grey spread the ball wide, that Monument flyhalf Ivan Smit timed the intercept to perfection, scoring a length-of-the-field try. Wikus van Biljon quickly added the extras, narrowing the deficit to three.

Both teams adopted an all-out attacking approach and a penalty was eventually given Monument’s way that Van Biljon kicked to level the scores.

Due to the high standard of play, the Sharks Academy awarded bursaries to five boys, instead of three. The recipients are Glenwood duo Kenny van Niekerk (prop) and Curtis Jonas (flyhalf), flank Adrian Heystek from Westville, fullback Justerino Davids from Dale and fullback Barend Smit from HTS Middelburg.
