Grey College scored nine converted tries to thrash Grey High 63-8 in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. DYLAN JACK reports.
Grey College’s fourth consecutive win in this fixture sees them remain unbeaten this season, while Grey High’s unbeaten home run comes to an end.
The College pack, lead by another storming performance from flank De Wet Marais, simply proved too strong for the hosts, who defended heroically in the first half but ran out of steam in the second.
It took just five minutes for College to score their first try through SA Schools centre Wyclef Vlitoor, who handed off a would-be tackler.
High responded through a well-struck penalty from flyhalf Matthew Easton, but College soon got their second try, with hooker André-Hugo Venter finishing off a fine interchange of passes.
High did their best to bounce back, with the centre pairing of LJ du Preez and Liyema Matyolweni both making breaks, but some poor handling let the hosts down at crucial times.
It was from another Matyolweni break that College got their second try as they turned the ball over near their own line and released flank Marais, who showed off his pace before handing the ball off to wing Ian Small-Smith to sprint in a fantastic try.
After an initial period of pressure from High in the second half, they got their fourth when flyhalf Zander du Plessis stepped through a number of defenders for a close-range try. Another break from Marais again saw College go close, with Small-Smith grabbing his second.
The visitors were certainly not done, though, as big prop Herman Agenbag went over from a smart move off a five-metre lineout and he was on hand to finish off a linebreak from fullback Richard Kriel for his brace.
The scoreline then started to get ugly as Vlitoor easily scored his second, before replacement flank Werner Gouws went over in the corner.
Easton exploited a late yellow card to College No 8 WJ Steenkamp to race in High’s only try, but it was little consolation.
