Grey and Boishaai shine at Wildeklawer

Grey College form a huddle Grey College
Published on May 5, 2019 | Leave a response

The Wildeklawer schools festival came to an end in Kimberley on Saturday, and the results of the two days’ play have gone some way to determine the pecking order of the top rugby schools, writes THEO GARRUN.

There are a number of big clashes still to come, and Paul Roos Gimnasium – one of the very best in recent seasons – were not there, but at this stage it seems clear that Grey College and Paarl Boys’ High are going to be there or thereabouts when the dust settles by the end of the season in August.

Saturday’s game between Grey and Paarl Gimnasium was billed as the game of the weekend, and it turned out to be just that. It was won 47-33 by Grey in the end, with both sides playing great rugby and some amazing skills on display. Grey scored one or two ‘miracle’ tries that clinched it for them, but there wasn’t much to choose between the teams.

Paarl Boys’ High were too strong for Affies in their second game, winning 39-12. On day one they demolished Glenwood – one of last year’s top five sides – 55-7 for a total of 97 points in their two games.

Paul Roos Gimnasium were at the Sanix World Youth Tournament in Japan, which they won. They play Paarl Gim on May 18th, which will show where they slot in among the top guns.

Before then, Paarl Boys’ High travel to Bloemfontein this coming weekend to play Grey College in a game that will tell us who are tops out of those two.

Among the others at Wildeklawer, Monument showed that they will be a force up North this year by beating Boland Landbou and HTS Drostdy. Garsfontein also won both their games, as did Stellenberg and Framesby. Affies’ disappointing season continued, and Helpmekaar suffered the misfortune of two last-minute one-point defeats.
