Glenwood scored at the death to beat EG Jansen 27-26, while there were also wins for Pretoria Boys’, Selborne, HTS Drostdy and Transvalia on day one of the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival.
In the penultimate game on Thursday, Glenwood flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse nailed a stoppage-time conversion to give his team a nail-biting victory.
The Green Machine trailed 14-0 towards the end of the first half as EG Jansen centre Louis de Bruin scored an excellent opener before flyhalf Kyle Potgieter reached over for a self-converted try.
Glenwood narrowed the deficit just before the break when Lehlohonolo Litabe showed great strength to power over and make it 14-7 at half-time.
Jansies extended their lead early in the second half through big loosehead prop Brandon Pienaar, who scored from close range to make it 19-7.
Glenwood kept fighting, though, and hit back when outside centre Martino van Wyk stepped past two tacklers to finish off a fine attacking move, before Hendrikse knocked over two penalties to give them the lead for the first time.
With two minutes to go, EG Jansen looked to have scored a match-winner through a magnificent run from hooker Kyle Pepler, which made it 26-20. But Glenwood replacement back Steven Gibb then scored in the corner, giving Hendrikse a tough angle, but the flyhalf converted with ease.
In other results, hosts Kearsney College began the day with a 27-11 loss to Pretoria Boys’ High, while Eastern Cape-based Framesby scored two second-half tries to grab a 25-25 draw against Welkom Gim.
Selborne started their long weekend with a comfortable 29-10 victory over Noord Kaap, with Hoerskool Transvalia scoring six tries to hand DHS a 34-12 defeat in the final match of the day.
