Bulls fullback and Blitzboks hopeful Warrick Gelant is set for an extended period on the sidelines as the result of a knee injury. CRAIG LEWIS reports.
Gelant recently returned to action for the Blue Bulls Currie Cup side after recovering from a broken jaw suffered in a Super Rugby match against the Sunwolves at the end of March.
He then joined the SA Sevens Academy side this week where it was hoped he would be able to play in the Rome Sevens tournament and make a late claim for inclusion in the Blitzboks’ Olympic squad.
However, scans have revealed that the knee injury Gelant carried into the sevens camp is more serious than first thought, and it’s expected that he will require surgery.
SARugbymag.co.za has learned that Gelant may have played in the Currie Cup qualifier clash against the Leopards with this knee complaint, but is waiting for a medical report from the Bulls.
Gelant’s latest injury is not only a blow to the Bulls’ Super Rugby campaign, but also to the Blitzboks, who had hoped he could be a contender for their squad that will head to the Rio Games in August.
