Chiefs coach Warren Gatland has begrudgingly congratulated his son Bryn on his match-winning drop goal for the Highlanders on Saturday.

The Highlanders hosted the Chiefs in the first rugby game since the sport came to a halt two and half months ago, and the highly anticipated fixture lived up to expectation.

Damian McKenzie slotted a timely drop goal to give the Chiefs a 27-25 lead with about three minutes remaining. But, in another late twist, the Highlanders worked their way downfield and Bryn Gatland nailed a drop goal of his own to seal a dramatic win for the hosts.

When asked about his son’s heroics for the opposition, Gatland pleaded indifference, saying he is disappointed with the result and doesn’t care about anything else.

‘I don’t care whether he’s my son or not, I’m still disappointed about the result,’ Gatland said. ‘I suppose if anyone is going to do it, it’s going to be him in that situation. I’m not happy we lost the game but well done to him. I’ll go away and have a look at that.’
