French clubs have reportedly agreed to lower the salary cap gradually over the next four years due to the financial strain of the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to French media reports, the presidents of the 30 Top 14 and Pro D2 clubs gathered in Toulouse on Tuesday to confirm a salary cap decrease by more than €1 million, with the clubs required to meet the new salary cap within the next four years.
Following Tuesday’s gathering, the organising body of French professional rugby, the LNR, will vote on Wednesday to officially ratify the 12% salary cap reduction from €11.3m to €9.94m.
It is believed clubs wanted to be able to sign two marquee players that would fall outside the cap but league bosses rejected the proposal.
