The South African unions that host Vodacom Super Rugby franchises are reportedly no longer interested in participating in the Provincial Rugby Challenge.
According to Rapport newspaper, the move comes as a result of the reduction of the number of players that unions will be contracting.
Due to the change in South Africa’s player contracting model, unions will only be allowed to have a maximum of contracted 45 players.
The unions that host Super Rugby franchises have already told SA Rugby that they would like their participation in the competition to end in 2020 as they believe they will no longer be able to field competitive teams throughout the tournament.
A final decision on the future of the Rugby Challenge, which replaced the Vodacom Cup, will be made later this year.
