Former Valke player Zane Killian has officially been charged in connection with the murder of Lieutenant Charl Kinnear.
Kinnear, a top cop in the Anti-Gang Unit, was shot and killed outside his home in Bishop Lavis a week ago.
The 39-year-old Killian has since been arrested in Springs in Gauteng and charged with complicity in the murder. Now that he’s been charged, Killian can be named.
Killian played professionally for the Valke between 2005 and 2013, making 34 Currie Cup and 24 Vodacom Cup appearances for the union.
Killian – who owns a tracking and investigations company – had allegedly tracked Kinnear’s cellphone for months and, according to sources close to the investigation, had been requested by a man who identified himself as ‘Mohamad’ to track the cellphone.
Killian appeared in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court on Friday, but the case was postponed until 5 October for further investigation.
