Fiji beat Tonga 29-19 and Samoa took down the New Zealand Heartland XV 36-19 in their respective World Cup warm-ups on Saturday.
Fiji and Tonga put on a scintillating display of attacking rugby, with the former ultimately outlasting their rivals to clinch a 10-point triumph.
Tonga made the better start with tries from Siale Piutau and Paula Ngauamo to give them a 14-7 lead.
But Fiji wrestled back the momentum by scoring four unanswered tries – by Vereniki Goneva, Semi Kunatani, Dominko Waqaniburotu and Samuel Matavesi – to make their lead unassailable.
Tonga did pull one back to set up a nervy finish, but tempers boiled over late in the match, with both No 8s, Maama Vaipulu and Perceli Yato, sent to the sin bin for throwing punches. No further points were scored.
Elsewhere, Samoa outscored New Zealand Heartland six tries three to claim a comfortable win. Michael Alaalatoa and Kane Leaupepe both bagged a brace for Samoa.
