Former Transvaal and Northern Transvaal lock Barend Britz has died after being attacked at his bar in Perpignan on Thursday night
According to France Bleu, the 63-year-old died upon arrival at a hospital.
The attacker reportedly entered the bar at around 9pm, threw several chairs and shattered windows before striking Britz, who tried to calm proceedings, several times on the head.
A suspect, believed to be in his 30s, was later arrested by police and placed in custody.
Britz played for Transvaal and Northern Transvaal in the 1980s before moving to France where he played many years for Perpignan.
He retired from rugby in 1996.
