Doctors are optimistic about Ethienne Reynecke’s chances to make a full recovery after suffering a stroke.
Last Thursday, the former hooker and SuperSport commentator was rushed to hospital, where he was treated in intensive care. Reynecke was said to be in a stable but critical condition at the time.
He was moved from ICU to the neurology ward on Tuesday and was sedated while doctors waited for the medication to take effect.
On Wednesday, he was said to be recognising family members, while the latest update on his condition is also positive, with Reynecke having reportedly started to speak.
He does not require surgery and doctors are keen to get him out of the neurology ward soon.
Reynecke previously played for the Lions, Western Province and Cheetahs, while also having stints with overseas clubs Saracens and Connacht.
