SA Rugby president Mark Alexander says the Springboks’ performance at the upcoming World Cup in Japan will not determine Rassie Erasmus’ future.
Erasmus signed a six-year contract with SA Rugby as both its director of rugby and Springbok coach at the beginning of 2018.
It has, however, been reported that Erasmus may decide to step back from his duties as Bok coach to focus on his responsibilities as director of rugby after the World Cup.
Alexander told Netwerk24 that talks will be held with Erasmus after the World Cup, but his team’s performance will not affect the outcome of the discussions.
‘We will sit down with Rassie after the World Cup and hear if he wants to continue in both roles after the tournament or if he wants to bring in someone else as head coach,’ Alexander said.
‘Rassie has done a brilliant job and he will not be judged on his performances at the World Cup,’ Alexander added. ‘Our plan when we appointed Rassie was to build a team for the 2023 World Cup.’
The Springboks’ 31-man squad for the World Cup will be announced in Johannesburg on Monday.
