SA Schools coach Sean Erasmus says he is excited about the quality of rugby on display at the U18 Craven Week and Academy Week in Paarl. DYLAN JACK reports.
With a number of the unions being able to field two sides at Craven Week this year, Erasmus ― who is assisting Faizel Adam with the Western Province U18 team ― faces a difficult job choosing a squad for the international series in August.
‘What has been really impressive, with the little amount of time the teams have to prepare, is when you look at the brand of rugby the teams are playing. It is really exciting,’ Erasmus told SARugbymag.co.za. ‘The boys are keeping the ball moving, the basics are good, so I am impressed by the way the teams have played here and it is really nice to watch.’
Erasmus added that it was a dream come true to be able to coach SA Schools.

‘Every coach should aspire to represent their country in whatever way. For me, what is important is that the boys fulfil their primary functions on the field. I also want to look at resilience and character.
‘We are playing three tough internationals in a very short period of time, so what you are looking for is a player who can keep on playing and show that character through all the tough times. We have a short time to prepare so I, along with the selectors, are looking at players who put their hand up and really want to wear that green and gold jersey.’
SA Schools will face France on Friday, 10 August, Wales on Tuesday, 14 August and England on Saturday, 18 August.
