The South African Rugby Players' Association says EP Kings players' contracts are still legal and binding.
Sarpa was responding to an email sent by EPRFU president Cheeky Watson on 18 December to players who had not been contracted by Saru for the Southern Kings' Super Rugby campaign. They include Jacques Engelbrecht, Carel Greeff, Charles Marais, David Bulbring, Gary van Aswegen, JC Roos, Jurgen Visser, Mark Richards, Ronnie Cooke and SP Marais.
In the email, Watson said 'no financial relief would be provided in the near future' and that the players would be approached to possibly terminate their contracts with the EP Kings.
Sarpa, however, told Rapport that Watson's email was 'premature' adding that the players' contracts are 'still legal and binding' and they 'must still be paid accordingly.'
The EP Kings have been unable to pay their players since a R200-million sponsorship arranged by Watson failed to materialise.
