The Blitzboks have called up uncapped Carel du Preez to replace the injured Philip Snyman for this weekend's Tokyo Sevens tournament.
Snyman sustained a knee ligament injury during the most recent leg of the series in Hong Kong, where the Blitzboks finished in third place.
Du Preez is currently contracted to the SA Sevens Academy and has already played a couple of times for the Academy team at tournaments in George, Dubai and Harare.
The tall loose forward represented Western Province in the U21 Currie Cup competition last year and has impressed the SA Sevens coaching staff since switching to the shorter code at the end of last year.
The Japanese tournament is round seven of the nine-round World Rugby Sevens Series. South Africa currently hold a two-point lead over Fiji heading into the final three rounds, with New Zealand following close behind.
Meanwhile, World Rugby has confirmed the pool draw for the Tokyo Sevens in Japan, where South Africa will be joined by USA, Canada and Kenya in Pool C.
